GAS can cause a wide range of diseases, but most notably streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat) in school-aged children and teens; other diseases (or complications) include fever, rheumatic fever, kidney damage, wound and skin infections (for example, impetigo) and occasionally, necrotizing fasciitis and shock.

Scarlet fever is also a non-invasive infection caused by GAS, although much less common. The invasive infections caused by Group A β-hemolytic streptococcus tend to be more severe and less common. These occurs when the bacterium is able to infect areas where bacteria are not usually found, such as blood and organs.

Symptoms and signs of GAS disease are variable and are related to the body area that is affected by the infection; for example, sore throat, throat erythema, and swollen lymph nodes in strep throat to low blood pressure and organ failure in streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS).

Treating an infected person with an antibiotic for 24 hours or longer generally eliminates their ability to spread the bacteria.



Serological identification of the organism involves testing for the presence of group-A-specific polysaccharide in the bacterium's cell wall using the Phadebact test. The rapid pyrrolidonyl arylamidase (PYR) test is used for the presumptive identification of group A beta-hemolytic streptococci.

After a history and physical examination, many clinicians presumptively diagnose strep throat from its symptom production and throat appearance (see Fig. 2). However, cultures from the throat or other site of infection form the basis of definitive testing.



Milder infections caused by GAS (strep throat, skin infections) are often treated with oral antibiotics (for example, penicillin v [Pen-Vee-K, Veetids], amoxicillin [Amoxil, Dispermox, Trimox], cephalosporins; if allergic to penicillins, erythromycin [E-Mycin, Eryc, Ery-Tab, Pce, Pediazole, Ilosone], azithromycin.

These medications inhibit the spread of bacteria and infections. Several types of antibiotics are available. However, penicillin and amoxicillin are the most common medications given for a strep infection. It's important that you finish your antibiotic treatment course to kill the infection completely.


Each year between 1,100 and 1,600 people die due to invasive group A strep disease. In contrast, there are estimated to be several million cases of non-invasive group A strep illnesses, like strep throat and impetigo, each year.

The new research found GBS is present among pregnant women in all regions of the world, with an average of 18% of pregnant women worldwide carrying (colonised with) the bacteria, ranging from 11% in eastern Asia to 35% in the Caribbean, totalling 21.7 million2 in 195 countries.

Epidemiology of Severe Streptococcus pyogenes Disease in Europe▿ Annual age-standardized rates of severe S. pyogenes infection by country for 2003 and 2004. The rates are standardized against the European standard population.

It is estimated that about 10,000-15,000 cases of invasive GAS disease occur in the U.S. each year resulting in over 2,000 deaths. CDC estimates there are 500-1,500 cases of necrotizing fasciitis and 2,000-3,000 cases of STSS each year in the United States.

Worldwide Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common bacterium causing pneumonia and meningitis. Invasive pneumococcal infection, primarily bacteraemia and meningitis, occurs most commonly in young children aged less than 5 years and older adults aged over 65 years.
