Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), especially coronary heart disease (CHD), have assumed epidemic proportions worldwide. Globally, CVD led to 17.5 million deaths in 2012. Other striking features of CVD epidemiology in India are high mortality rates, premature CHD, and increasing burden.

Singapore. Every day, 16 people die from cardiovascular disease (heart diseases and stroke) in Singapore. Cardiovascular disease accounted for 29.5% of all deaths in 2016. This means that nearly 1 out of 3 deaths in Singapore, is due to heart diseases or stroke.

The Genetic Risk Score was significantly associated with incident 'hard' coronary heart disease ( p for men: 1.70 × 10-10-1.73 × 10-9; p for women: 0.001). Conclusions The Genetic Risk Score is an independent predictor for incident 'hard' coronary heart disease in our ethnic Chinese population.

They are caused by a mutation in one copy of a gene. If a parent has a dominant genetic disease, then each child has a 50% chance of inheriting the disease. An example of a dominant genetic disease is Achondroplasia that occurs in 1 in 25,000 live births.

CVD is the main cause of death in men in all but 12 countries of Europe and is the main cause of death in women in all but two countries. Death rates from both ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke are generally higher in Central and Eastern Europe than in Northern, Southern and Western Europe.

CVD causes 46 times the number of deaths and 11 times the disease burden caused by AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined in Europe. 80% of premature heart disease and stroke is preventable.


Some of these are very rare. The more common ones include: Atrial fibrillation: a common arrhythmia that increases the risk for stroke. Brugada Syndrome: a genetic disorder of the heart rhythm that can cause ventricular fibrillation and sudden cardiac arrest.
Some people with an inherited heart condition have no symptoms, while other people develop symptoms such as: dizzy spells. palpitations, and. blackouts.

Signs of heart failure include shortness of breath, fatigue, weakness, difficulty with exercise and "asthma" that doesn't improve with an inhaler. Palpitations or an abnormal heart rhythm at a young age. Fainting, black-outs, or seizures that couldn't be treated with typical seizure medications.


Genetic testing is the process of taking a sample of a person's DNA to look for changes that could cause inherited heart disease. Important changes in genes are called pathogenic mutations. The term “pathogenic” means disease-causing. This figure shows the genetic testing results for this family.

The importance of PGD in this group of conditions is due to the fact that there is no current prospect of their treatment, as the disease may manifest despite pre-symptomatic diagnosis and follow up. So PGD seems to provide a possible relief for the at-risk couples to reproduce without much fear that their prospective children could be at high risk for premature or sudden death. This paper presents the world’s largest experience of PGD for inherited heart disease, performed for couples at risk who were able to avoid the risk and produce healthy children free of predisposition to inherited heart disease.


It is important to develop a method that is safe and effective for the treatment of human disease. Important issues such as tolerance and ease of administration need to be translated to the clinic. For cardiovascular disease, gene therapy has been limited due to vectors and delivery to the target cell.
Viral vectors such as AAV (adeno-associated virus) and LV (lentivirus) have been used to deliver beneficial genes, including angiogenic growth factors such as VEGF, factors to address heart failure such as SERCA2a to restore calcium function and SDF-1 to activate local stem cells.
Acute aortic syndrome is a variety of acute painful and potentially life-threatening aortic pathologies that require immediate medical attention. Acute aortic syndrome includes aortic dissection, aortic ulcer, intramural hematoma and unstable or painful thoracic aortic aneurysm.
